    Great Fire 350

    September 2016 marks the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London. The Monument, the base of which is the location of our shop was erected in commemoration. Did you know, if you were to lay the Monument flat, the top would be at the exact point that the fire began in Pudding Lane.     C&G Delivers in the city

    Following the success of the new shop at the base of Monument in EC3R, we were recently featured as a case-study by our online platform partner, Butterware. The cloud based ordering system is used by customers in both Richmond and Monument allowing our many customers to order easily and efficiently online any time of the day - with immediate order confirmation to keep their minds at rest that the catering for important meetings is arranged.     Cook & Garcia on Sky news

    In case you missed it our shop in Richmond was featured on Sky news in June. We were asked to comment on the story that Starbucks are taking capuccino off the menu in the US as sales have dropped so much in favour of the flat white. We have noticed a similar trend in our stores, but don't worry it won't be dropped from the menu as we know there are still some firm capuccino fans. For a masterclass on the difference (it's all about the 'frothy capuccino stuff'), then watch the clip!

    Cook & Garcia opens in The City

    There were enormous queues at our new shop at the base of Monument recently. The launch event proved extremely popular with the line weaving out of site. The shop is now open from 7.30 every day offering breakfasts, lunches,coffees and sweet treats for City workers.     Cook & Garcia makes no. 31 in Start Up 100's list

    Cook & Garcia were honoured to have moved their way up the list reaching the dizzy heights of number 31 this month. The judges were impressed with our attempt to stand out from the 'clone high street', and provide better taste and service than the global brands.     Celebrating National Sandwich Week

    In honour of 2015 National Sandwich week. Here are a few wierd and wonderful sandwich facts. 1. The sandwich is named after John Montagu (1718-92), the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who started a craze for eating beef between two slices of toast. 2 Around 12 billion sandwiches are eaten every year in the UK. 3.The world’s largest sandwich currently weighs 5,440 pounds and our favourite In 2008, an attempt in Iran to beat the record for the world's biggest sandwich failed when the impatient crowd ate it before it was measured

    New shop to open in Monument

    The final touches are being put onto our new shop in the City. We have found a high profile site at the base of the Monument, constructed to commemorate the Great Fire of London. All our delicious wraps, salads, soups, pies, breakfasts and coffee will be available as you would expect. There will be a seating area upstairs and outside for those not having to rush back to work.     C&G to launch in the City - new lease just signed.

    Richard recently signed a lease for the second Cook & Garcia that is due to open at the base of Monument, in the City in April. Following several months of searching for the perfect site, we came across a new retail unit that has been built into new 7 storey office building at the high profile site of 22 Monument Street. Building works are in progress and we hope to be open by the end of April.

    Due to an increase in the number of people ordering from our business menu - we have decided to invest in a trolley to help Sylwia with all her deliveries. We are now feeding many of the workers of Richmond each day during their breakfast and lunchtime meetings, so watch out for Sylwia on the streets of Richmond - she has a bell and is not afraid to use it!     Cook & Garcia takes part in the worlds largest coffee morning

    We were delighted to take part in the world largest coffee morning as a charity event in October. Along with hundreds of coffee shops up and down the country, we did our bit to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. In addition to swapping our tip box for a charity box allowing customers to donate, we donated all our coffee sales in the morning to the charity. We look forward to taking part again next year.

    Richard presents keynote speech at 'The Lunch Show'

    Richard had a full house at the recent Lunch Show held at the Business Design Centre in London when he was invited to talk about 'How to become the best independent sandwich bar'. The packed audience listened intently as he told the story of the research he carried out before opening, the changes he has had to introduce, his relationships with suppliers, marketing on a shoestring and the importance of the internet. There were many question from other independents as well as few chains coming to check out the new kid on the block.

    Janet invited to judge at British Smoothie Championship

    Janet Garcia was invited to be a judge at the British Smoothie Championship. This hard fought contest was also hosted at the lunch! show in London. After several knock out rounds, Janet, with the other judges had to taste 9 different smoothies that made their way through to the final round. It was a tough choice, but the final winner was Indie Wilson-Fish from Juicafe in Lancaster with Crussh and Shaketastic as close runners up.

    We recently finalised an agreement with Oakfield Capital Partners to invest in Cook & Garcia. Oakfield are a private equity firm that invests in small and medium-sized businesses in the UK, and we look forward to working with them for the next phase of our growth.     Best Sandwich Bar in the UK for 2nd year in a row!

    This year the judges from the British Sandwich Association visited nearly 90 different independents all over the country as part of the judging process. Jim Winship Director of the BSA said "The judges were highly complimentary about on how they (Cook & Garcia) have maintained their excellent standards. Having won last year they had set their own bar to exceed." The winner this year is invited to represent the entire british sandwich industry in Japan at The Best of British Fair in October, so Richard is getting prepared.

    Cook & Garcia shortlisted for 2014 Independent Sandwich Bar of the Year.

    Tension is building as the British Sandwich Association announced the shortlist of nominees with the category of 'Best Indepdendent Sandwich Bar' being one of the hardest fought. The winner will be announced at a black tie ceremony on May 15th, and this years winners are being invited to Japan to represent the British Sandwich Industry at the annual 'Best of British Fair'.

    Cook & Garcia support UK Coffee Week

    We were delighted to support UK Coffee Week in April to help to raise money and awareness of Project Waterfall. Project Waterfall is a charity dedicated to providing clean water to all coffee growing countries, as some of them are the poorest in the world. The cafe was decorated in bunting, and we were selling menu cards at the till points. All donations were matched by Cook & Garcia.

    Janet Garcia was recently invited to a reception at City Hall celebrating the communities of Richmond, Kingston & Hounslow. Boris stressed the importance of supporting local businesses and was interested to hear about Cook & Garcia as an independent surviving on the high street. We gave him one of our mugs as a gift, as well as inviting him in for one of our trade mark wraps next time he visits Richmond - so look out next time you are in, he may be in the queue behind you!

    To keep you warm this winter, we have extended our range, starting with delicious Pies. These are produced by award winning 'Timmy's Pies' only a few miles away and served either on their own, or with mash, minted peas and gravy. Flavours include Steak & Ale, Chicken, mushroom & white truffel oil, or vegetarian Hommity. A must try to keep you warm this winter.

    'Independent Outlet of the Year' - another National Award!

    We were thrilled to pick up another national award when we were named as 'Best Independent Outlet' by Lunch Business, the Grab & Go awards 2013. The ceremony, took place at London Art House on 26th of September and recognizes the best of those providing for the lunchtime 'grab & go' market. Other winners included Caffe Nero, with the Founder receiving a Special Achievement award and Marks & Spencer being named as the Group Operator of the Year, so we were in very good company!

    Cook & Garcia open second unit in Richmond Office

    Cook & Garcia opened their second unit in a large office block in Richmond town centre. The pod, situated in an office block housing 500 people offers our ususal delicious range of sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee and cakes to workers without them having to leave the building. We are very grateful for the warm welcome and look forward to serving our new customers in the coming months.

    Save time, Order online with Click & Collect Service

    Regulars are now able to avoid the queues by ordering their artisan sandwiches online. The new service available on this website allows people to chose their favourite fillings from the deli, chose their bread, spread, salad and any other special requests. You can add on drinks or extra snacks, pay online and so long as you order before 12pm, then your lunch will be made fresh, put in a bag and ready for collection.

    Pay instore with your mobile via face recognition

    The shop was the centre of a media storm following the trial of a new PayPal app that allows our customers to leave their wallets at home and pay directly with their mobile phone. When somebody checks in on their phone, their picture comes up on an ipad at the till, and they are charged directly from their paypal account. The app grabbed the headlines with press coverage from all the national press, radio as well as cameras and interviews with ITV, BBC and Sky. Crazy Day! For more info see this video...

    Another national award nomination!

    Cook & Garcia has been shortlisted to the final 3 for the Best Independent Outlet at the Lunch Business Grab & Go Awards 2013. The winner will be announced at an awards presentation on 26th September at the London Art House, situated just five minutes walk from the Business Design Centre, where this year's lunch! show is being held.

    Cook & Garcia win 'Independent Sandwich Bar of the Year'!

    Cook & Garcia were named as Winner of a much coveted 2013 'Sammies' Award last night at a glittering ceremony in Central London, attended by hundreds of representatives from the British sandwich industry. The judging panel shortlisted 50 Independents across the UK to secretly visit, looking for the best quality in terms of product range, atmosphere, facilities and service.     Cook & Garcia shortlisted for National Award by British Sandwich Association

    We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for 'Independent Sandwich Bar of the Year' for the Sammies 2013. These are well recognised Industry awards organised by the British Sandwich Association, with an award ceremony taking place on May 16th in Park Lane. As we understand, the judging panel visited over 50 independent sandwich bars for this category - and have shortlisted Cook & Garcia into the final 7. Fingers crossed for the 16th.

    We are thrilled to announce the arrival of our new coffee parther, Union. Union Hand-Roasted Coffee is a small company, owned by Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia, that is dedicated to the joy of high quality Arabica coffee.     As winners of a much coveted Richmond Business Award, Richard was invited to speak at the Chamber of Commerce Entrepeneurs Conference. Richard was talking to other start ups and independent businesses about the trials and tribulations of launching a new brand to the high street. Feedback was overwhelming with his presentation described as 'inspirational' by many people in the room!

    Cook & Garcia winner at Richmond Business Awards

    During a black tie event held at Richmond Hill Hotel our website was announced as the Winner of best business website in the borough of Richmond. The event, run by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and attended by MP Zac Goldsmith and the Mayor of Richmond was a great celebration of a website that allows customers to keep engaged and informed about all that we have to offer. The program states: ‘’Cook & Garcia impressed the judges with a website that is innovative, meets commercial objectives and builds rapport with stakeholders’’

    Celebrity Customer Spot!

    There was great excitement on Tuesday when Ian Brown (lead singer from the Stone Roses) popped in for lunch. As you can see from the smile on Richard’s face – Ian Brown has long been a musical hero of his. He stayed for a chicken wrap and a chat, sharing that they will be on tour again soon, including London – what a nice guy.
